Remembering the Busby Babes on the 65th Anniversary of Munich

Today is a poignant day for the Harry Gregg Foundation as we remember the 65th Anniversary of Munich.

On the 6th February 1958, 23 people – including eight Manchester United players – suffered fatal injuries in the Munich Air Disaster.

The Manchester United team had been travelling back from a European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade when their aircraft stopped in Germany to refuel. The first two attempts to take off from Munich airport were aborted; following a third attempt, the plane crashed.

Harry, Manchester United goalkeeper at the time, was on board the flight and is often regarded as ‘the hero of Munich’, courageously returning to the wreckage to rescue a 20 month old baby and her pregnant mother and dragging many of his teammates from the plane not knowing if they were dead or alive.

Today we at the Harry Gregg Foundation will take a moment to remember those we lost and remember our much loved and dearly missed hero, Harry.
